Berlin Airport Express

"It was a nightmare to travel from West-Berlin to East-Berlin via Friedrichstrasse before the fall of the Berlin wall. The proposal is a reflection on the transformation of time into a drawing. My interest is "generative art", which I realize on pen-plotters. Any event can be used as a generative trigger for an artpiece. In this small-scale series, I used the time-schedule information of the Berlin-Shoenefeld-Airport-Express as such a trigger. This is mathematically not really sophisticated, but it makes use of an important concept of mathematics, the Cartesian Coordinates. The transformation of hours and minutes to x and y coordinates is straightforward. The 4 small images (there are altogether seven), are drawn with horizontal pencil strokes only. The drawings have delicate gray shades and they have a tendency towards painting with a pencil. The generative principle is strictly algorithmic. A random contaminator introduces minor distortions, effective on successive runs." - Dehlinger, 2008
