I think my appreciation for graffiti started from passing an electricity box on my way to school, a walk I did twice every weekday for 6 years. Seeing the continuous cycle of pieces and council cover-ups would excite me and it quickly became a feature of the journey for me and my friend. However, it wasn't until the last few weeks I've considered the possibility of painting myself.
Coincidentally, the other night I re-discovered a couple of books (in the library that is my downstairs loo), Graffiti Lives, OK and Graffiti 3. First published in 1979 and '81, they're records of graffiti at the time, mostly through plain text with the exception of a few fascinating lo-fi photographs.
